Zusammenfassung

Das Johannesburg General Hospital in Südafrika ist eines von nur zwei Level-1-Traumazentren in Südafrika. Die Trauma Unit dieses in staatlicher Trägerschaft befindlichen Universitätsspitals versorgt als rein traumatologische Notaufnahme etwa 20.000 Patienten jeder Altersstufe pro Jahr, inklusive 1700 „major resuscitations“. Mit einem hohen Aufkommen an polytraumatisierten Patienten und hierunter insbesondere penetrierenden Traumen ist die Arbeit in der Trauma Unit eine diagnostische und therapeutische Herausforderung für ein gut ausgebildetes Team, welches den Patienten nach ATLS-Richtlinien in einem ganzheitlichen und gut funktionierenden Traumakonzept (Präklinik, Notaufnahme, OP und Intensivstationen) versorgt.
