Zusammenfassung

Das Gehirn braucht ausreichend Schlaf. In dieser scheinbaren Ruhephase ist es aber sehr aktiv und regelt wichtige Körperfunktionen wie Herzrhythmus, Atmung, den Stoffwechsel oder das Immunsystem. Die 4 Schlafstadien im Elektroenzephalogramm sind die Einschlafphase (~10 % der Nacht), der leichte Schlaf (~50 % der Nacht), der Übergang in den Tiefschlaf mit anschließendem Tiefschlaf (~20 % der Nacht) und der Traumschlaf, auch als REM-Schlaf bezeichnet (~20 % der Nacht). Ein uralter Schutzmechanismus bewirkt, dass wir nachts mehrmals kurzfristig wach werden. Sind solche normalen Schlafunterbrechungen aber sehr häufig und längerdauernd, dann können sie zu Herzrhythmusstörungen führen (Christensen et al. 2018).
