Zusammenfassung

Noch Mitte des letzten Jahrhunderts wurde Stillen als überflüssig und die Formulaernährung der Industrie als weitgehend gleichwertig angesehen. Seit Mitte der 1980er-Jahre kommt es jedoch europaweit zu einer deutlichen Renaissance des Stillens. In aktuellen Umfragen geben die meisten werdenden Mütter an, ihre Kinder stillen zu wollen.
Die Muttermilch ist die natürliche Ernährung des Kindes und somit in idealer Weise an die Bedürfnisse des Kindes angepasst. Die artspezifische Zusammensetzung und die Anpassung der Muttermilch an die wachsende Stoffwechselfunktion des Kindes sowie der immunologische Schutz sind trotz großer Fortschritte in der Herstellung von künstlicher Säuglingsernährung weiterhin unnachahmbar und unersetzlich.
Der Artikel beschäftigt sich mit der Physiologie und Pathologie der Laktationszeit. Dargestellt wird übersichtsweise der Umgang mit den typischen Stillproblemen wie Mastitis, Milchstau und Soor der Brust und Erkrankungen der Mutter oder des Kindes.
