SOUPS

Welcome to the Fifth Symposium On Usable Privacy and Security! This year's program features 15 technical papers, two tutorials, 19 posters, 11 posters published in the past year at other conferences, a panel, six discussion sessions, and an invited talk. On Wednesday evening SOUPS 2009 attendees will head to the Computer History Museum for dinner among a wonderful collection of artifacts of computing history.

This year we received 49 technical paper submissions. Each paper was refereed by at least three members of the technical papers committee, and through an online discussion process the committee selected 15 papers for presentation and publication.

The technical papers committee selected the paper "Ubiquitous Systems and the Family: Thoughts about the Networked Home" by Linda Little, Elizabeth Sillence, and Pam Briggs to receive the SOUPS 2009 Best Paper Award. This paper presents a study that used videotaped scenarios to elicit participants' trust, privacy and identity concerns about pervasive computing.

SOUPS 2009 features an invited talk on redirects to login pages by Eric Sachs of Google. A panel discussion will focus on the usability of open source security software.

Finally, the SOUPS 2009 program includes six parallel "discussion" sessions, featuring moderated discussion on a topic of interest to attendees. We hope the informal, small group format will lead to lively and productive interactions.

This is the fifth year of SOUPS and the first year that SOUPS is being held outside of Pittsburgh. We are excited to bring SOUPS to a new location where it will be accessible to a new audience. We would like to thank Google for their generosity in hosting and sponsoring SOUPS.
