Definition

Abdominal compartment syndrome is a disease process in critically ill patients from an elevation of intra-abdominal pressures that results in multisystem organ dysfunction or failure.

Causes of Abdominal Compartment Syndrome

Abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) and intra-abdominal hypertension result from increase intra-abdominal pressures within the confines of the abdominal cavity. This elevation in pressure leads to impairment of the cardiac, pulmonary, renal, gastrointestinal, hepatic, and central nervous system function. There are both surgical and nonsurgical causes of abdominal compartment syndrome, and it is increasingly recognized as a potential complication in critically ill patients.
