Definition
Problem behavior is socially defined as a problem, as a source of concern, or as undesirable by the social and/or legal norms of conventional society and its institutions of authority. Problem behavior usually elicits some form of social control response, whether minimal, such as a statement of disapproval, or extreme, such as incarceration (Jessor 1991; Jessor et al. 1991). The concept of “problem behavior” has been extended in the adolescent health literature to include risk behaviors, health-risk behaviors, health-compromising behavior, antisocial behavior, and behavior emanating from a lack of youth developmental assets (Valois 2003, 2013; Valois et al. 2014).
