Summary

Medical fungi have a very long tradition in the herbal medicine of Asian countries like China and Japan. In the 1970ths research started in western medicine. Medical mushrooms show promising results in adjuvant cancer treatment, especially by improving immunological und hematologic parameters as well as quality of life. In 2011, a review concerning breast cancer again reports positive effects, even if further clinical studies are needed to elucidate the mechanism of action and the medical benefits. The paper gives an overview about the most common medical mushrooms applied in gynecological tumors and informs about the possible indications, side-effects, contraindications and benefits.
