Zusammenfassung

Der vorliegende Beitrag befasst sich mit den Auswirkungen von Fernseh- und DVD-Konsum auf die Sprachentwicklung im Kindes- und Jugendalter. Dieser ist nicht pauschal als gut oder schlecht zu bewerten, sondern hängt von verschiedenen Faktoren ab. Daher werden – nach einem kurzen Überblick über die Nutzungsdaten – die verschiedenen Bedingungen beleuchtet, die den Zusammenhang zwischen Fernseh- und DVD-Konsum auf die Sprachentwicklung moderieren. Hierzu gehören Bedingungen aufseiten des Kindes, die zu erlernende Sprachkomponente, Merkmale des Fernseh-/DVD-Materials sowie Umgebungsfaktoren. Abschließend geht der Artikel auf die Auswirkung des Fernsehkonsums auf den Schriftspracherwerb ein.

Abstract

This paper summarises empirical evidence on the effects of television and DVD usage on language acquisition in children and adolescents. There is no simple yes or no answer to this situation. We therefore first address data concerning the amount of time children of different ages spend in front of the television or watching movies. Furthermore, we discuss various mediators between the influence of screen media and language development. Among these are child characteristics, the linguistic component in question, characteristics of the movie or television show, and the environmental context in which watching takes place. Finally, we turn our attention to the influence of television on reading and writing competence.
