Zusammenfassung

Die Lebenserwartung der Deutschen hat sich seit Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts kontinuierlich erhöht. Dies hat auch Folgen für die Gesundheitsberichterstattung: Konzentrierte sie sich bis zum Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts vorwiegend auf Mortalitäts- und Morbiditätsstatistiken, sind heute vor allem die Konsequenzen chronischer Erkrankungen interessant. Die WHO führte daher das Konzept der Lebenserwartung bei guter Gesundheit (HALE) ein. Der Begriff der funktionalen Gesundheit, ein wesentlicher Indikator für die Lebensqualität, trägt dem Rechnung. Dennoch nehmen Aktivitätseinschränkungen mit dem Alter zu. In welchem Umfang ältere Personen noch selbstständig ihren Alltag meistern können, kann mit Instrumenten wie den ADL („activities of daily living“) und den IADL („instrumental activities of daily living“) gemessen werden.

Abstract

Life expectancy in the German population has been rising continuously since the early twentieth century. This also influences reporting on health matters: up to the end of the twentieth century this was concentrated mainly on mortality and morbidity statistics, while interest is now centred on the consequences of chronic illnesses. The WHO has therefore introduced the concept of healthadjusted life expectancy (HALE). The term functional health, an important indicator of quality of life, also takes account of this. There are instruments that make it possible to measure to what extent older people are still able to manage their day-to-day lives independently, such as the ADL (activities of daily living) and the IADL (instrumental activities of daily living).
