Der Pneumologe Aims and scope

Abstract

Radiation damage is the term used to refer to the pathological effects of ionizing rays, i.e. electromagnetic waves and corpuscular radiation, on the human organism. Pulmonary radiation damage manifests clinically as subacute pneumonitis and/or as pulmonary fibrosis as a late reaction. Although many organs may be affected in fire accidents, heat damage to the lungs is the most severe. In around 80% of victims, the cause of death is inhalation trauma. Pulmonary barotrauma during artificial respiration is the most common form of pressure-induced pulmonary damage.
