Zusammenfassung
Hintergrund
Abstract
Background
Individual disposition, exercise, age and certain diseases influence and change haptic perception (active touch); however, so far no tests have been available that objectively measure the haptic threshold while the eyes remain open. This article presents results of a new test and training instrument for the first time.
Objectives
The study investigated possible age and occupation-related effects on haptic sensitivity in physiotherapists compared to control subjects as well as physiotherapy students.
Methods
To measure the haptic threshold of the participants the haptic threshold test (HST) was used which consists of 13 separate, round threshold pads containing parallel grooves and ridges, which become narrower from pad to pad. The results of the 102 participants were compared.
Results
Physiotherapists showed superior haptic sensitivity compared to the control group. Additionally, the haptic threshold decreased less with age; however, large interindividual differences of haptic sensitivity were found in all groups. Additionally, a significant mean difference in haptic sensitivity between the physiotherapy students and of other fields was found.
Conclusions
The daily sensory demands of the physiotherapist occupation resulted in a lower age-related decline of haptic sensitivity compared to the control group. The large interindividual differences in sensitivity were, however, not equalized by the occupational demands and, therefore, require additional sensory training, especially during academic training.
