Abstract
The authors argue that resource activation is a primary principle of change in psychotherapy and explains a large amount of its positive effects. They base their argument on empirical findings and on theoretical considerations. The principle of resource activation is conceptionally elaborated within a more comprehensive view of psychotherapy. From this point of view a problem oriented perspective is needed to define the necessary changes to the brought about during the psychotherapeutic process. However, for the way these therapeutic changes should be initiated, a resource oriented approach and the activation of resources seems to be more important. The resource perspective should determine to a large extent the prescription of the specific procedures to be applied. The principle of resource activation is a pervasive change mechanism which influences the whole therapeutic process. It corresponds more to an attitute of the therapist rather than to a therapeutic technique. The development of a resource oriented thinking and of specific competencies to activate the patient’s resources should constitute an important part of any training program in psychotherapy.
