Abstract
A 78-year-old man was found lying lifeless on the ground in front of his car and resuscitation measures were immediately initiated, among other things with the aid of a mechanical cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) device. During the inspection of the corpse a skin-penetrating, non-adaptable defect with surrounding dessication in the area of the breastbone as well as a material defect of the pullover worn at the time of discovery became apparent. Due to the suspicion of a gunshot wound an autopsy was requested.
The results of the autopsy showed an acute on chronic, global cardiac insufficiency to be the cause of death. A callus of the 5th rib with a bone spur could be identified as the cause of the defect near the chest bone, which acted as an abutment during CPR. This case shows that the consequences of resuscitation measures, especially by forensic lay persons, can lead to a false deduction of violence by a third party.
