Zusammenfassung

Dieses Kapitel beschäftigt sich überwiegend mit zwei Fragen: Erstens, gibt es Geschlechtsunterschiede bei chronischen Muskelschmerzen, speziell bei chronischem Rückenschmerz, und zweitens, gibt es dafür schon Erklärungsansätze? Kurz gesagt, scheinen die meisten Studien Geschlechtsunterschiede nahezulegen. Frauen leiden offenbar häufiger unter Muskelschmerzen als Männer, wobei die Geschlechtsunterschiede beim Rückenschmerz nicht sonderlich ausgeprägt zu sein scheinen. Epidemiologische Daten, die in diesem Beitrag präsentiert werden, können über die mit den Geschlechtsunterschieden assoziierten Faktoren erste Auskünfte geben. Weitergehende Aufschlüsse können gewonnen werden, wenn zusätzlich experimentelle Ergebnisse herangezogen werden, die im zweiten Teil des Beitrags überblicksartig dargestellt werden.
