Zusammenfassung
Das somatosensorische System verarbeitet Informationen aus Haut-, Gelenk-, und Muskelrezeptoren und dient damit primär der Wahrnehmung sensorischer Qualitäten wie Druck, Berührung, Schmerz und Temperatur. Die Integrität dieses Systems ist eine notwendige Voraussetzung für das Verarbeiten komplexer Stimuli, z. B. für das Erkennen dreidimensionaler Strukturen und Objekte (Stereognosie). Weiterhin spielt der somatosensorische Kortex eine fundamentale Rolle beider Erfassung von Bewegungsinformation (Kinästhesie) und der Wahrnehmung der Arm- und Handposition im Raum (Propriozeption). Daher besitzt das somatosensorische System vor allem mit dem motorischen System enge anatomische und funktionelle Verflechtungen. Funktionell fasst man beide Systeme auch als «sensomotorisches System» zusammen.
In diesem Kapitel sollen vor allem fMRT-Studien zur kortikalen Domäne im Vordergrund stehen, insbesondere zur Somatotopie und zur taktilen Verarbeitung von einfachen und komplexen taktilen Stimuli (für einen Überblick über die subkortikalen und peripheren Strukturen der Somatosensorik seiauf ▸ Kap. 1.3.4 verwiesen). Diese werden vor dem Hintergrund tierexperimenteller Daten diskutiert; insbesondere Rhesusaffen (Macaca mulatta) haben sich beim Menschen für das sensomotorische System als gutes Tiermodell bewährt, da viele In-vivo-Experimente (z. B. direkte intrakortikale Ableitung von Neuronen, während die Tiere bestimmte Aufgaben verrichten; gezielte Läsionen und deren Auswirkungen auf Verhalten etc.) aus technischen und ethischen Gründen beim Menschen nicht durchzuführen sind.
