Zusammenfassung
In traditionellen Betrachtungen zu politischer Partizipation gelten soziale Kontakte als wichtige Ressourcen (sowohl formeller als auch informeller Natur), die mitentscheiden, in welchem Maße sich Bürger politisch engagieren. Im Rahmen der Debatte über ‚soziales Kapital ‘hat diese Interpretation in den letzten Jahren große Aufmerksamkeit erfahren. Die Konsequenzen der Beteiligung an Vereinen und Verbänden werden durchweg als sehr positiv bewertet. Empirische Analysen zeigen, dass insbesondere Wahlbeteiligung und Beteiligung an so genannten konventionellen Formen politischer Partizipation durch soziales Engagement der Bürger gefördert werden. In diesem Sinne ist soziale Beteiligung sicher als eine ‚Schule der Demokratie ‘zu betrachten.
