Abstract

Demographic change is a challenge for Germany’s ageing society. Old age structures will change under the influence of decreasing birth rates and increased life expectancy (Hoffmann, Gesundheit und Krankheit im Alter. Beiträge zur Gesundheitsberichterstattung des Bundes. Berlin, 2009). Instances of multimorbidity increase considerably with old age. According to the DEAS (German Survey of Old Age), three quarters of those aged over 65 reported having more than one disease. Just under half of those aged 40–85 (46 %) already have two to four concurrent diseases, and one in five of those over 85 has five or more concurrent diseases. With increasing age the risk of needing care grows, and this can bring not just a loss of health but also diminishing independence (Wurm‚ Altern im Wandel. Befunde des Deutschen Alterssurveys (DEAS). Stuttgart, 2010).
