Abstract

Platelet activating factor (PAF) has been implicated in a number of processes in reproductive biology including the synthesis and release of PAF by human spermatozoa,1 enhancement of sperm motility,2 ovulation4,5 and penetration into the oocyte. PAF has also been detected in the uterine tissue of a number of species6,7 and PAF receptors have been identified in endometrium,8 and myometrium.9 The relationship of PAF to implantation has received special attention. O’Neill and colleagues first reported10 that PAF was secreted by the embryo (for review see11) and that the implantation rate was increased in proportion to the PAF secreted into the media. A positive correlation was found also between the pregnancy outcome and PAF secretion by the embryo.11,12
