Community choir enhances coping skills and quality of life

Carol Davis Freelance writer

An initiative conceived by support charity Tenovus has made measurable benefits to survivors’ wellbeing and confidence. Carol Davis reports

This article explores the development of the Tenovus Sing for Life Choir for all people affected by cancer. Research has shown that the choir provides statistically significant improvements in quality of life, including vitality, social function and mental health, as well as a reduction in perceived bodily pain. Reduced anxiety and depression were also noted and members thought that participation improved their mood, self-esteem and provided a focus for the future. The choir, which began in Pontypridd, has secured £1 million from the Big Lottery AdvantAGE scheme to establish 15 choirs across Wales. The project won best charitable initiative at the national Excellence in Oncology awards 2011.
