Sian Poore Chemotherapy clinical nurse specialist, Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, Wales

Tracey Gunter and Sian Poore describe how the development of a telephone assessment service to enable home administration of the final dose of chemotherapy has reduced waiting times and increased patient satisfaction

This article describes the development of a service for patients with lung cancer receiving oral chemotherapy. The aim was to improve patients’ experience of their care and their quality of life by reducing hospital visits. Additional service benefits have been a reduction in new patient waiting times and opportunities for training, role development and greater autonomy for nursing staff.
