Abstract
Abstract. Background: Although the number of marriages with partner from different countries is continuously increasing, knowledge about how binational relationships work is still sparse. Objective: The goal of this study is to gain insight into coping of intercultural couples. Methods: Multivariate analyses of covariance were computed to compare individual and dyadic coping in 225 Thai-Swiss couples (only Swiss men and Thai women participated) and 234 Swiss couples (controlling for age, relationship quality, and duration). Results: Thai women use denial as an individual coping strategy more often than do Swiss. Additionally, intercultural couples show negative dyadic coping and stress communication behaviors less frequently than do intracultural couples. Conclusions: There are similarities but also differences between inter- and intracultural couples with regard to coping. These differences have to be further taken into consideration in counseling for intercultural couples.
