Zusammenfassung

Während Beschreibungen von Stimmen nach absolutem Kehlkopfverschluß — bei denen die Respiration des Patienten durch Tracheotomie oder Laryngotomie gesichert worden ist — bereits seit über 100 Jahren bekannt sind, basieren die eigentlichen Kenntnisse der Sprache ohne Kehlkopf hauptsächlich auf der um die Jahrhundertwende von Gluck ausgebauten Larynxexstirpationsmethode. Der erste, der die Beobachtung machte, daß ohne künstliche Hilfsmittel, unter Ausschluß des Kehlkopfes, eine Stimme und Sprache gebildet werden kann, war Raprand. Im Jahre 1828 hat dieser der Académie des Sciences in Paris unter Vorlegung des pathologischen Stückes eine Beobachtung mitgeteilt, daß trotz luftdichter Verwachsung des Kehlkopfes der Kranke noch sprechen konnte (“assez distinctement et de manière à être entendu à quelque distance„, zitiert nach A. Schär). Einen ähnlichen Fall hat Czermak (1859) beschrieben. Bei einem Mädchen mit vollständigem Kehlkopfverschluß kam es doch zu einer deutlichen, wenn auch leisen Stimmbildung. Zum erstenmal praktisch die Exstirpation des Kehlkopfes ausgeführt zu haben, ist das Verdienst von Patrik Heron Watson in Edinburgh gewesen, der im Jahre 1865 einen Larynx wegen syphilitischer Stenose so günstig entfernte, daß der Kranke die Operation überstand. Allerdings starb der Patient nach einigen Wochen an einer nicht mit der Operation zusammenhängenden Lungenentzündung. In der Schweiz war, nach meinen Nachforschungen, Kocher in Bern der erste Chirurg, der totale Laryngektomien ausführte (1881).
