Zusammenfassung

Die Weltgesundheitsorganisation definiert Gesundheit als „Zustand vollkommenen körperlichen, geistigen und sozialen Wohlbefindens und nicht allein das Fehlen von Krankheit und Gebrechen“. Abgeleitet wird davon ausgegangen, dass biologische, psychische und soziale Faktoren zur Entstehung von Gesundheit beitragen. Häufig ist es gerade bei sozialen Faktoren schwierig zu verstehen, warum diese eine Auswirkung auf die Gesundheit haben sollen. Der sozioökonomische Status ist eine Möglichkeit, soziale Faktoren zu qualifizieren, und da dieser gewissermaßen graduelle Abstufungen besitzt, auch zu quantifizieren. Aber warum folgt die Gesundheit einem sozioökonomischen Gradienten? Macht Armut krank? Oder ist es umgekehrt, folgt der sozioökonomische Status der Gesundheit? Macht Krankheit arm? Das vorliegende Kapitel versucht Antworten auf diese Fragen zu liefern.
