Zusammenfassung

Der Zeitpunkt für elektive Tracheotomien wird seit Jahren in einem inzwischen sehr umfangreichen Schrifttum diskutiert. In diesem Kapitel werden unter Berücksichtigung von Studien hoher Evidenz orientierende Empfehlungen zum Zeitpunkt für eine Tracheotomie bei langzeitbeatmeten Patienten gegeben, wobei die individuelle Einzelentscheidung im Zentrum der Betrachtung liegt.

Tracheotomien können sowohl im Operationssaal als auch in einer Intensivstation durchgeführt werden. Die Kriterien für diese Auswahl werden unter interdisziplinären medizinischen und organisatorischen Gesichtspunkten vorgestellt.
