Zusammenfassung
Der Schlaganfall ist eine der häufigsten und volkswirtschaftlich eine der teuersten Krankheiten. Der Schlaganfall ist in großen neurologischen Kliniken die häufigste Krankheit. Bis zu 50% aller stationär behandelten Patienten in diesen Kliniken haben eine vaskuläre Krankheit des Nervensystems. Wie in kaum einem anderen Gebiet der modernen Medizin haben Fortschritte in Diagnostik und Therapie eine grundlegende Änderung der Versorgungsstruktur bewirkt: Patienten kommen schneller in die Klinik, werden notfallmäßig diagnostiziert und auf modernen Schlaganfallstationen behandelt. Es gibt wirksame Medikamente, und die Prognose ist viel besser als noch vor 10 Jahren. Besonders erfreulich ist, dass dieser Paradigmenwechsel in Deutschland nahezu flächendeckend umgesetzt werden konnte, wie über 200 Stroke Units beweisen. Es gibt kaum einen Bereich in der klinischen Medizin, der international so stark von deutschen Spezialisten geprägt wird.
