Beatmungsgeräte übernehmen nur eine Teilfunktion der Atmung, nämlich die Belüftung der Lungen (Ventilation). Der pulmonale Gasaustausch bleibt Aufgabe der Alveolen, kann aber durch bestimmte Beatmungsmuster und -formen verbessert werden.
