Zusammenfassung

Im Laufe der letzten 170 Jahre entwickelte sich die Anästhesiologie von einem bloßen Gewährleisten intraoperativer Schmerzfreiheit zu einem perioperativen Managementprozess, dessen Aufgaben weit über die Anästhesie – im eigentlichen Wortsinn – hinausgeht. Neben einer präoperativen Evaluation möglicher patientenbezogener und prozeduraler Risiken und einer akribischen Planung der Vorgehensweise zur Reduktion des individuellen Patientenrisikos gehört eine ständige Überwachung der Vitalfunktionen des Patienten und Aufrechterhaltung der Homöostase ebenso zu den Kernaufgaben des Anästhesisten wie die Gewährleistung der prä-, intra- und postoperativen Schmerzfreiheit.
