Zusammenfassung

Demenz (lat. dementia: Unsinn, Wahnsinn) ist ein Syndrom, das die krankhafte, subakute oder chronische Verschlechterung der individuellen kognitiven Leistungen bezeichnet. Dabei werden zur Diagnosestellung die Betroffenheit von mindestens zwei kognitiven Teilbereichen gefordert. Diese Teilbereiche können beispielsweise Gedächtnis, Aufmerksamkeit, Sprache, visuell-räumliche Leistungen oder sog. exekutive Funktionen (Entscheidungsfindung, Planen) betreffen.
