Alternative Verfahren werden gewöhnlich erst dann eingesetzt, wenn mit den konventionellen oder Standardverfahren das Ziel der Beatmungstherapie nicht erreicht werden kann. Die Grenzen zwischen konventionellen und alternativen Verfahren sind allerdings fließend.
