Zusammenfassung
Das Erzählen von (Lebens-)Geschichten ist eine Form der Sinnstiftung im Alterungsprozess, die der amerikanische Gerontologe Robert Butler als Life Review (1963) bezeichnet hat. Aus Sicht der literatur- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Alter(n)sforschung findet sich in der fiktiven Gattung des Bildungsromans mit seinem Fokus auf lebensweltlichen Wendepunkten und Entwicklungsphasen eine Entsprechung dieser Form der Sinnstiftung im Erzählvorgang. Dabei wird der ursprüngliche Fokus des Bildungsromans im 18. Jahrhundert auf die Entwicklung junger Menschen im 20. Jahrhundert fortgeführt in Erzählungen über das mittlere und hohe Alter, gekennzeichnet durch die Gattungsvarianten des Reifungsromans (Waxman 1990) und Vollendungsromans (Rooke 1992). Seit den 1980er Jahren hat sich in Europa und den USA die Erzählgattung der Demenzerzählung herausgebildet, die in engem Zusammenhang mit öffentlichen Diskursen in den westlichen Industrienationen entstanden ist, die das Risiko, im Alter an Alzheimerdemenz zu erkranken als Krisennarrativ festschreiben. Literarische Demenzerzählungen, so meine These, stellen eine spezifische Untergattung des Bildungsromans im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert dar, die einerseits die Grenzen des Entwickungsbegriffs narrativ ausloten und andererseits einen linearen Entwicklungsbegriff infrage stellen. Mein Aufsatz kontextualisiert den Beitrag der literarischen Gerontologie am kulturellen Wissen über das Alter(n), skizziert das Verhältnis des Bildungsromans zur Demenzerzählung, analysiert den medizinischen und öffentlichen Diskurs über Demenz als Krisennarrativ, um im Anschluss daran mediale und literarische Repräsentationen von Demenz in ihrer Wirkung auf die gesellschaftliche Wahrnehmung von Demenz zu interpretieren.
