Zusammenfassung

Der wesentliche Beitrag der Geographie zu einem Verständnis der (modernen) Staates besteht darin, dessen Räumlichkeit als Produkt sozialer Prozesse in den Blick zu nehmen. Der Staat ist am besten in Bezug auf verschiedene Raumformen zu verstehen. Neben dem Territorium, das in der gängigen Vorstellung als einzige Raumform des Staates fungiert, sind auch räumliche Maßstabsebene (Scale), Netzwerk sowie die emotionale Bindung an konkrete Orte (Place) relevant. Ein derartiges Verständnis erlaubt einen differenzierten Blick auf die Relevanz der Räumlichkeit des Staates und auf den historischen Wandel im Verhältnis von Staat und Raum.
