Frankreich ist die Geschichte eines Bürgerkriegs – schon seit dem 16. Jahrhundert: Von den Religionskriegen über die Zeiten der Fronde, der Revolution, der Pariser Kommune, der Dreyfus-Affäre, der Trennung von Kirche und Staat, der Liga gegen Rassismus und Antisemitismus in den 1930er Jahren und der Vichy-Regierung bis hin zum Algerienkrieg – jeder dieser Bürgerkriege stellte die Rechtmäßigkeit der politischen Macht grundlegend in Frage.
