Die Behandlung akuter oder chronischer Schmerzen durch Medikamente ist die häufigste Form der Schmerztherapie. Sie ist so alt wie die Medizin selbst, und die Anwendung von Opium zur Schmerzlinderung war schon im Altertum in Griechenland und China bekannt.
