Zusammenfassung
Der Schmerz ist für Verhalten und Befinden des Menschen von elementarer Bedeutung. So hat er als “Schadenfrühwamsystem” eine lebenserhaltende Funktion: Ohne Schmerzwahmehmung können Mensch und Tier in lebensbedrohliche Situationen kommen. Der Ausfall eines anderen Sinnessystems (z. B. Sehen, Hören) kann dagegen weitgehend ausgeglichen werden. Wenn Schmerz chronisch auftritt, hat er seine Funktion als Warnsignal meistens verloren. Er wird dann oft zum dominierenden Faktor im Leben eines Patienten und kann sogar zu schwersten Störungen der Psyche bis zum Suizid führen.
