Zusammenfassung
Das Ohr ist unter den Sinnen der Wächter. Im Gegensatz zum Auge ist es ständig offen und empfangsbereit, selbst im Schlaf. Es informiert über Ereignisse und warnt vor Vorgängen, die in unserer Umgebung stattfinden. Immer dann, wenn sich etwas bewegt, entsteht Schall; denn durch Bewegung geraten die der bewegten Materie unmittelbar benachbarten Luftmoleküle in Schwingung, die ihrerseits benachbarte Luftteilchen anstoßen und in Schwingung versetzen und so fort. Hierdurch entstehen in schneller Folge Verdichtungen und Verdünnungen (Schallwechseldruck), die sich in der Luft (oder auch in einem anderen Medium, wie z.B. Wasser) vom Ort ihrer Entstehung nach allen Seiten hin als Schallwellen ausbreiten. Die verschiedensten Bewegungen, die um uns herum entstehen, kreieren ein sehr komplexes Schwingungsmuster. Dieses wird vom Außenohr (Ohrmuschel und Gehörgang) aufgenommen und dem Trommelfell zugeleitet, wobei das Schallsignal, abhängig von der Einfallsrichtung, durch die Ohrmuschel gefiltert und ferner durch Resonanzwirkung des äußeren Gehörgangs frequenzspezifisch verstärkt wird. Das Trommelfell als akustischer Druckempfänger überträgt dieses Schwingungsmuster auf die Gehörknöchelchen im Mittelohr und schließlich über das ovale Fenster auf die Flüssigkeit im Innenohr. Die Erregungen der im Innenohr lokalisierten Rezeptoren werden über die afferente Hörbahn in bestimmte Areale des Cortex weitergeleitet (20; siehe Kapitel 2).
