Zusammenfassung

Die benigne Prostatahyperplasie (BPH) ist eine Erkrankung älterer Männer, die sowohl von der Zahl der Betroffenen als auch den Kosten als Volkskrankheit bezeichnet werden kann. Trotzdem sind die Kenntnisse z. B. über den naturlichen Verlauf und die Häufigkeit in den einzelnen Altersgruppen sehr gering. Aus diesem Grund ist in den letzten [ahren eine rege Diskussion über die Indikation für einzelne Therapieverfahren entstanden. Epidemiologische Daten über den Verlauf der Erkrankung sind aus diesem Grunde sowohl für die Prognosestellung als auch die Wahl des richtigen Therapieverfahrens von Bedeutung. Zusätzlich lassen sich sehr viel präziser Normwerte fur einzelne diagnostische Verfahren sowie Symptomscores erstellen. Des weiteren sind diese Informationen hilfreich fär die Planung klinischer Studien. Leider sind in Deutschland nur wenige epidemiologische Daten vorhanden, die eine präzise Schätzung der Zahl der betroffenen Männer zulassen. Aus diesem Grund werden intern ationale Studien herangezogen, die zumindest größenordnungsmäßig einen Anhalt geben, wie viele ältere Männer von einer BPH betroffen sind.
