Zusammenfassung

Den meisten Menschen ist nicht bekannt, welche Folgen der Alterungsprozess für die Sexualität eines normalen, gesunden Menschen hat. Zum einen stehen nur wenig Informationen darüber zur Verfügung, wie sich das Alter auf die sexuelle Funktionsfähigkeit auswirkt, zum anderen handelt es sich dabei um ein Thema, das den meisten Personen unangenehm ist. Studenten, die im Rahmen einer Studie befragt wurden, äußerten die Erwartung, der Alterungsprozess würde zu einer allmählichen, aber ziemlich starken Abnahme der sexuellen Aktivität im Laufe jeder Altersdekade nach dem 20.–30. Lebensjahr führen (Zeiss 1982). Weiterhin gingen sie davon aus, dass dieser Rückgang bei ihren Eltern stärker als bei einem durchschnittlichen älteren Paar sein würde. Befragt nach ihren eigenen Kenntnissen, antworteten ältere Menschen, dass sie zu diesem Thema nur wenige oder keine Informationen über die Medien, von den medizinischen Versorgungseinrichtungen oder von Familienmitgliedern und anderen älteren Personen erhalten hätten (Wiley u. Bortz 1996). Der Informationsmangel von Seiten der medizinischen Versorgungseinrichtungen ist dabei nicht überraschend, da die Datenlage darauf hindeutet, dass vielen dieser Versorgungseinrichtungen das Wissen über Sexualität, insbesondere bei älteren Menschen, fehlt (Hillman u. Stricker 1994).
