Zusammenfassung

Die Idee, Gewebe durch Dehnung zu vergrößern, findet sich bereits in der griechischen Mythologie in der Gestalt des Prokrustes. Afrikanische Völker in Äthiopien und im Tschad haben sich seit Jahrhunderten ihre Lippen durch Holzscheiben und Metallplatten aufgedehnt, um äußerlich sichtbare Merkmale ihres ästhetischen Bewusstseins oder ihres sozialen Prestiges zu setzen [228]. Ähnliches ist auch von den Paduang-Stämmen auf Burma bekannt, die ihre Halslänge mit Ringen kontinuierlich vergrößerten [45].
