Zusammenfassung

Der Erfolg der Intensivtherapie wird häufig am akuten Gelingen, dem Überleben der Akutphase auf der Intensivstation oder dem Krankenhausüberleben, gemessen. Wie sich das Überleben dieser schwer kranken Patienten im weiteren Verlauf entwickelt, ist nur selten im Blickfeld von Studien. Doch gerade die langfristige Betrachtung von Patienten nach Intensivtherapie ist notwendig, um die Stellung der Intensivmedizin bei verschiedenen Erkrankungen und Patienten definieren zu können. Hier ist es wichtig, die gewonnenen Ergebnisse auch unter dem Aspekt, welche Langzeitfolgen allein durch die Intensivtherapie hervorgerufen wurden, kritisch zu hinterfragen. Außerdem müssen die aufgedeckten Probleme dazu dienen, die Therapie selbst zu verbessern.
