Zusammenfassung

Die Intensivmedizin ist einer der kostenintensivsten Bereiche im Gesundheitswesen (Engel et al. 2007). 3–5% der stationären Patienten benötigen eine intensivmedizinische Behandlung (Martin et al. 2004), die hierfür 15–20% eines Krankenhausbudgets verbrauchen. Innerhalb dieses Budgets entfallen 60–70% auf das pflegerische (ca. 40%) und ärztliche (ca. 20%) Personalbudget (Hawner 2001). Zur Kostenintensität tragen die hohe Technisierung und der Einsatz teurer Medikamente und Behandlungsmethoden, aber auch der hohe Personalbedarf bei. Weltweit steigt der Bedarf an Intensivtherapiebetten im Verhältnis zu peripheren Betten bedingt durch den medizinischen Fortschritt und die demographischen Veränderungen kontinuierlich an. Gleichzeitig sind die monetären Ressourcen begrenzt, und die verfügbaren ärztlichen und pflegerischen Mitarbeiter werden als Fachkräfte immer knapper.
