Abstract

An instructor has determined that a student paper or thesis is a plagiarism. What happens now? There is no simple answer to that question. Is this a first-year student? Then it might be possible to turn the situation into a teaching moment. The instructor has the undivided attention of the student, and can teach about good academic practice. Is this a final thesis, or even a dissertation? That is unacceptable. The exact procedures are different from institution to institution – and some universities in Germany have no defined procedures whatsoever.
