Zusammenfassung
Performance within a university hospital and specifically the performance of the nursing services are to a large extent influenced by the management of the nursing staff. The early identification of suitable and motivated people will play a central role in a future oriented management. In times of a shortage of skilled employees it is important to offer career options and attractive work conditions. The decision of a caregiver to pursue the path toward leadership in future and to effectively do so should be based on sound and well-founded experience: The “Program of Trainee Development and Training of Junior Executives in Nursing at the University Hospital Regensburg” offers potentially suitable and motivated people the opportunity to learn about the everyday life of a position in nursing leadership and the related tasks, challenges and opportunities. This takes place in regular practice time but having the benefit of being detached from the daily pressure such a position can bring. The definition and conceptual development of the various program activities enables its participants to significantly expand upon the often primary health care focus to cross-organizational processes and management issues. In addition the targeted key skills are promoted and, personal responsibility is exercised by designing the future professional career. In summary it can be said that this program provides the staff in nursing service an effective and targeted support in the planning of their own professional careers. At the same time it carries out the company’s perspective at an early stage and planned support of junior employees, enabling mid-to long-term occupation of appropriate sites with efficient and prepared people who are already familiar with the requirements and can justify the position they hold.
