Zusammenfassung

Holistic Nursing (HN) is an innovation in the profession of nursing and is now recognized as one of the newest subspecialties in nursing in the United States of America. This evolution of nursing professional practice is nearing approximately thirty years old. The integration of the practice of HN specifically within the acute care hospital environment is nearing thirteen years. The practice of HN may also employ the use of select Healing Art Therapies (HAT) such as energy based healing modalities such as Healing Touch or Reiki, the clinical use of essential oils, massage, guided imagery, healing music or acupressure amongst others. It is fundamentally important to base holistic nursing practice upon a holistic nursing theoretical framework. Just as imperative is the premise that the greatest strategy a professional nurse can employ is to imbue nursing practice in healing presence. It begins with the individual nurse living an examined life, viewing nursing practice as a calling, and engaging a holistic perspective of self-care, compassion, and heart-centered choices on the journey. Connecting the “work” of professional nursing to one’s “lifework” is an essential part of the path.
