Zusammenfassung
Die klinische Ernährung von Kindern und Jugendlichen unterscheidet sich in wesentlichen Punkten von Ernährungsstrategien bei Erwachsenen. Der Grund für das besondere Vorgehen liegt in der Physiologie des noch reifenden Organismus, der sowohl in Funktion als auch im Wachstum seiner Organe und Körperstrukturen einer dynamischen Entwicklung unterliegt. Zusätzlich sind die körperlichen Voraussetzungen pädiatrischer Patienten sehr unterschiedlich. Z. B. werden in der Kinder- und Jugendmedizin Patienten behandelt, deren Körpergewicht eine Spanne von weniger als 500 g beim extrem Frühgeborenen bis zu über 100 kg beim adipösen Jugendlichen umfassen kann. Dem Behandelnden muss bewusst sein, dass Kindern aufgrund geringer Körperspeicher und wegen der funktionellen Unreife bestimmter metabolischer Abläufe, oft geringere Kompensationsmechanismen zur Verfügung stehen als Erwachsenen.
