Zusammenfassung

Mit zunehmendem medizinischem Fortschritt sind heutzutage immer größere und belastendere Eingriffe bei zugleich älteren und mehrfach vorerkrankten Patienten erfolgreich möglich. Die wesentlichen Gründe dafür liegen in der besseren Kenntnis pathophysiologischer Zusammenhänge, subtileren Operationstechniken und nicht zuletzt in der Weiterentwicklung der Anästhesiologie und Intensivmedizin.
