Zusammenfassung

Zwischen 1958 und 1961 wurden rund 10000 Kinder mit schweren Gliedmaßendefekten geboren, deren Mütter das Schlafmittel Thalidomid eingenommen hatten. Seit dieser Katastrophe herrscht bei pharmazeutischer Industrie, Ärzten und Patientinnen berechtigte Vorsicht — häufig jedoch auch irrationale Panik — im Hinblick auf den Einsatz von Arzneimitteln in der Schwangerschaft. Nach statistischen Erhebungen nehmen 15–50% aller Schwangeren Medikamente im ersten Schwangerschaftsdrittel ein, oft noch in Unkenntnis der Schwangerschaft, was angesichts der sensiblen Phase der Organogenese in den ersten 3 Schwangerschaftsmonaten besonders fatale Auswirkungen haben kann. Seit der Contergan-Affäre ist das Bewusstsein der Öffentlichkeit für derartige Komplikationen besonders geschärft.
