Zusammenfassung
Das rheumatische Fieber und die rheumatische Herzerkrankung stellen eine autoimmunologisch vermittelte Folgeerkrankung einer Streptokokken-Serogruppe-A-Infektion dar. Obwohl in den letzten 50 Jahren die Prävalenz des rheumatischen Fiebers und der rheumatischen Herzerkrankung in den Industrieländern deutlich gesunken ist, spielen beide Erkrankungen weltweit noch eine bedeutende medizinische und gesundheitsökonomische Rolle, nicht zuletzt weil v. a. Kinder und junge Erwachsene befallen werden. Obwohl der genaue Pathomechanismus noch nicht bekannt ist, zeigen insbesondere präventive Therapieansätze gute Erfolge.
