Zusammenfassung

Die Gründung des weltweit ersten Kinderhospizes „Helen House“ im britischen Oxford bedeutete 1982 eine Zäsur für die pädiatrische Palliativmedizin: Die Gründerin Frances Domenica, Nonne und Krankenschwester, wurde durch ihre Freundschaft mit dem tumorkranken Mädchen Helen zur Einrichtung eines Hospizes für Kinder und Jugendliche inspiriert. Inzwischen gibt es mehr als 30 britische Kinderhospize sowie zahlreiche Palliativeinrichtungen für Kinder in anderen Ländern. Einige Kinderhospize bieten Einrichtungen für spezielle Altersgruppen an, so das Baby-Hospiz „Zoe’s House“ in Liverpool oder die Jugendabteilung von „Acorns Walsall“ in Birmingham.
