Zusammenfassung

In den anerkannten internationalen Lehrbüchern der Geriatrie und der Palliativmedizin ist ein zunehmendes Interesse an der Palliativversorgung alter Menschen zu verzeichnen. Diese erfreuliche Tendenz spiegelt sich ebenfalls in den Schwerpunkten internationaler Artikel wider. Die frühere Annahme, bei einem alten handele es sich in der Regel um einen „lebenssatten Menschen, der symptomarm und ohne lebensbedrohliche Erkrankung keiner palliativmedizinischen Betreuung bedürfe“, scheint weitgehend widerlegt (Wilmsen-Neumann et al. 2002, Husebø S u. Husebø BS 2005). Der erste Schritt eines noch sehr langen Weges ist getan. Erst jetzt beginnt die eigentliche Arbeit, durch engagierten und kompetenten Einsatz dazu beizutragen, dass alle alten Menschen einen guten Lebensabend erwarten dürfen.
