Der Austausch von Sauerstoff (O2) und Kohlendioxid (CO2) zwischen Zellen und Organismus und dem die Zellen umgebenden Milieu wird als Atmung im weitesten Sinne bezeichnet. Dabei sind mehrere Transportschritte hintereinander geschaltet, die Konvektion und Diffusion nutzen.
